The Facebook-owned WhatsApp is reported to introduce a new data privacy
feature that allows the users to download entire data from the service. This WhatsApp new feature is likely to be available worldwide before May 25. It is further reported that the data privacy feature may be extended to other applications like Facebook and Instagram.
According to WABetaInfo report, this is a part of General Data Protection Regulation that can affect all Facebook-owned companies. It allows users to have more control over their data thus ensuring privacy and integrity. Talking about the feature, Microsoft says that this feature is essential in this present world as data is increasingly becoming important for their services.
WABetaInfo post says "WhatsApp has submitted a new update through the Google Play Beta Programme, bringing the version up to 2.18.50. A new GDPR privacy option is under development that will also affect Facebook family of companies"
The instructions in the Beta version reports that the users will find an option to “Download my data” in the “Account” settings. It allows creating a data report from the account. The report can be ported to another service or can be kept as a backup. This entire download process may take time and WhatsApp allows you to carry remaining tasks while the file is downloading. It will notify the user when the data report is ready.
"We will send you a notification when the data is ready. This can take as long as 20 days. Your report will be deleted from the server in 30 days"
In addition, WhatsApp is trying to add a new transparent gray background for the timestamp under the download sticker with this update. As already told, these two new features are still under testing. They might be remotely available in the coming updates.
